Music
This page lists all the releases outside of my own solo CDs that I play on (that I can think of).
There are numerous small companies in the U.S. & Europe who have licensed one or two tracks from my solo CDs for inclusion on compilation CDs of their own. I have not listed any of these, however, as those tracks are on either "Until We Meet Again", "Get It While It's Hot" or "Jackpot!".
All of the songs on the following albums are not available elsewhere, and are either live recordings, studio recordings not on one of my CDs, or older, pre-solo career recordings.

Frank Biner: Fixin' To Jam
(Acoustic Music 319.1231.2 - Germany)The last release from late Bay Area guitarist/singer Frank Biner. A killer singer and great guitarist, Frank was another musician with German connections, and had recorded in Germany several times with a lot of the musicians that I've gotten to know over here. I play on 3 tracks on the CD, all original tunes by Frank: the slide guitar blues, "Lonesome Highway", the Bo Diddley-ish "Down On San Pablo Ave.", and the acoustic, old-timey title track, "Fixin' To Jam".
Tommy Schneller Extravaganza: Blues For The Ladies
(Out Of Space Records - Germany)The second CD from Germany's tenor sax maniac Tommy Schneller. This CD features many original songs, some of them co-written by my present guitarist, Christoph "Jimmy" Reiter, who also plays on one tune. I play harp on one track on this CD, the slow blues "Ten Years Gone By".

The Blues You Would Just Hate To Lose Vol. II
(Right On Rhythm ROR006)
Top DC-area blues booster Wayne Kahn does it again!! This is the 2nd collection of Washington DC-area bands released on his label, Right On Rhythm. Wayne specializes in live recordings, and most of the tracks on this CD were recorded by his "Mobile Unit" at clubs in the area. For sure, my one tune here (a live recording of "Slinky", of which the studio version is on my new CD) is not the only reason to track this CD down. The album features tracks not available anywhere else by The Nighthawks, Tom Principato, Big Joe & The Dynaflows, DC's own blues harp monster (and brother of Bobby Radcliff) Bruce Ewan, and many other great DC-area bands.
Various Artists:
Best of the Central N.Y. Harmonica Blow-Off
(Poverty Records PR0041)
All tracks recorded live in one of the hottest blues towns in the U.S. - Syracuse, NY, between '96-'98. This is a great (and hard-to-find) compilation with tracks by 10 really good and lesser-known harpists. Gary Primich has a track, as well as Pete McMahon (one-time singer/harpist with Savoy Brown), and Tom Townsley does a great tribute to George Smith. Each player has one track; mine is a live version of the instrumental title track of my first CD, "Until We Meet Again". I sometimes have copies of this CD available for sale at my shows.
Various Artists:
What Kind Of Girl Is This? - Carolina Jump Blues 1985-98
(Gutter Records CD 98-003)
This collection, on Gary Gibson's Gutter Records label, features some of the better-known artists of the Shag and Beach Music circuit in the southeast. Besides Doug Jay & the Blue Jays (U.S. version), there are tunes here by Jumpin' Johnny Sansone, Rev. Billy Wirtz, and others. My 4 tracks are all covers: Jimmy Nolen's "I Can't Stand You No More", Brownie McGhee's "I Need Someone To Love Me", Eddie Burns' "Treat Me Like I Treat You", and Koko Taylor's "What Kind Of Girl Is This?" Outside of the 5 tracks on my new CD and the live track on "The Blues You Would Just Hate To Lose 2", these are the remaining recordings of the American version of Doug Jay and the Blue Jays.
Mojo Blues Band: Blues Parade 2000
(Styx CD 1002 - Austria)Another cool collection from Vienna's Mojo Blues Band, this 2 CD set features performances by numerous American blues artists like Jimmy McCracklin, Nappy Brown, A.C. Reed, and others. The 5 tracks here on which I play were all recorded live on a tour I did with the Mojo B.B. in late '93 that included legendary New York bluesmen Bob Gaddy (pno/vcl - who, unfortunately, passed away in 1997) and Larry Dale (gtr/vcl).
I play and sing lead on 3 tracks - 2 of which I wrote, "Keep Rockin' Me Baby" & "Playgirl". The 3rd track of mine is "Irene", the old Louisiana swamp ballad originally recorded by Guitar Gable & King Karl. I back Larry & Bob on harp on 2 other tracks: "Rock A While" & "Baby, What You Want Me To Do". These shows were a blast, and The Mojo Blues Band assemble top-notch collections for their releases; this one is no exception.
Various Artists: West Coast Wailers
(Double Trouble DT 3036 - Belgium)Compilation CD on Belgium's Double Trouble label, featuring 3 tracks each by 5 different West Coast blues harpists. Although I was a resident of California at the time these tracks were recorded, I'm actually an "East Coast Wailer" - Washington, D.C. being my home town. But I'm happy to be included here, and am in good company; I had the opportunity to hear Mick Martin and Dave Wellhausen during my time in California, and they both blow their asses off!! My 3 tracks here were recorded during the "Until We Meet Again" recording session: Jimmy Rogers' "The Last Time", my own instrumental jump "Harmania", and Otis Blackwell's classic (originally recorded by Elvis), "Paralyzed".
Mike Henderson Blues Band: Cosmic Strut
(Pathways CD PR-5001)Although I'm not in the cover photograph, I play on every track of this CD by S.F. Bay Area blues guitar veteran Mike Henderson. Mike goes back a long way in the Northern California scene, having played in the area since the hippie era, when he had a band with Johnny Mars and others. Mike is an artist as well as a musician, and over the years he's played with most of the Northern California blues scene veterans. The rhythm section on this CD - Tim Wagar on bass & Jim Overton on drums - also appear on my first CD, "Until We Meet Again".
Dynatones: Chopped & Channeled
(Rhino Records 70149 - out of print)I play on 2 tracks on this 1991 release by San Francisco's Dynatones; Willy DeVille's "Soul Twist", originally recorded by Mink DeVille, and "History Is Made At Night", written by the band. I'm really happy with my sound on these tracks - I'm doing my Magic Dick impression on these two!!

Allstars: Tip Your Waitress
(Adelphi Records LP only, cat #AD4112 - out of print)The only album by the Allstars, recorded for Gene Rosenthal's Adelphi Records label in 1978, and produced by "committee" (The Nighthawks, The Allstars & Bob Margolin). The album had no original material on it. Following is the track listing with the names of the artists who originally recorded these songs in parentheses:
- Bumble Bee (LaVern Baker)
- Forty Days & Forty Nights (Muddy Waters)
- The Fever (Southside Johnny & The Asbury Jukes, written by Bruce Springsteen)
- Voodoo Woman (Koko Taylor)
- My Love Will Never Die (Otis Rush)
- Wasn't That Good (Wynonie Harris)
- Ninety-Nine Pounds (Ann Peebles)
- So Many Roads (Otis Rush/John Hammond Jr.)
- Hoodoo Blues (Lightnin' Slim, I think)
- Tell Mama (Etta James)
- Mean Old Train (Papa Lightfoot)
- Tell Me All The Things (Fleetwood Mac)
The album, although never widely distributed, received a rave review by Nick Tosches in the November 2, 1978 edition of Rolling Stone magazine.
